A native of Bigelow, Perry County, Arkansas, Hershel Gray was born on March 3, 1894 to Eliza (b. ca. 1858) and Nancy Gray (b. ca. 1866). Hershel Gray farmed with his father. Cordelia Neal was a neighbor of the Grays in Bigelow. Cordelia Neal (b. ca. 1868 in Arkansas) was married to J.W. Neal (b. ca. 1864 in Arkansas).
